Hello lovelies,

So this past weekend I went into the darkroom again to develop all of the inoculated slides that I gathered at the Visual Arts Open House. Fun fun stuff, hanging out in a completely quiet and empty building for two nights in a row (no sarcasm actually).

The results are actually kind of stunning.

I haven't yet had the opportunity to scan many in yet, so I will just upload one for now.

This semester I’ve been playing with the use of creating lines and bold shapes on walls and other surfaces. I’ve done a lot of searching and seeking out artists who already do this and have found countless examples. Some artists use just one wall. Others expand across more. There are even artists that incorporate single-point perspective into their work and use every surface that happens to be in the way.

Daniel Buren

A French conceptual artist. Buren’s creations are made up of stripes that are applied to the surfaces of buildings, walls, landmarks – architecture. He has created his own signature out of the use of the vertical stripe – a common pattern found in French fabrics and design. Quantity and scale are also a playful factor in his works as they range from walls filled with striped canvases to whole rooms covered in stripes. Buren also works with colours and other shapes. It’s very apparent that he has a distinct and recognizable style.

More on Daniel Buren: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Buren (English)

Daniel Buren’s Website: www.danielburen.com (French)

Jim Lambie

A Glasgow-based artist. Lambie is known for using glossy tape to build site specific installations where he covers entire floor surfaces with rainbows of tape. Most of his work follows the edges of the space, tracing the perimeter and slowly filling to the centre of the room. Lambie’s installations exaggerate the architectural details of spaces and changes a space’s experience. Lambie describes his spaces as a “dreamscape”, describing how creating so many edges causes them to dissolve. The hard edges ”evaporate” and it becomes hard to tell if the space is expanding or contracting.

More on Lambie’s floor installations: http://www.webexhibits.org/colorart/lambie.html

More examples of Lambie’s work: http://antonkerngallery.com/artist.php?aid=18

Scott Snibbe

A media artist and developer, Snibbe creates his works both in public spaces and on mobile devices. Unlike the works looked at previously in this post, Snibbe’s approach to spatial transformation involves the integration of technology and space. He has used video projections, mobile apps, and other hardware installations to create works that interact with the space his audience is part of. Interactivity is a key component of Snibbe’s work. His purpose is to create works that “bring meaning and joy to people’s lives.” Two works that relate to my research are “Transit” and “Boundary Functions“. Transit is a work installed in the Los Angeles International Airport. It is an array of 29 HD monitors that curve overhead in one of the Arrivals waiting areas. An animation depicting silhouettes of arriving travellers plays across all screens creating a narrative while showcasing local culture. While this work is strikingly different from the other works I’ve researched, I feel as though it is still an interactive “play” with space as it creates one long line directing attention as the animation flows from one end to the other. Boundary Functions is a projection work in which people interact with the work by stepping onto a square platform. The projection draws lines that divide people and define their “personal space”. In doing so, it makes the audience aware that the concept of personal space is dependent on the interactions of other people. The piece almost doesn’t exist without the participation of at least 2 people. Snibbe also creates several interactive iOS apps that echo his installation work’s ability to engage the audience and encourage interaction.

It started off as a quick fix. Construction in Tokyo’s busy train stations meant blocked passages, detours, and confusion. Train guard Shuetsu Sato, a former lettering artist working for Japanese newspapers, took matters into his own hand and created informative signs out of masking tape in order to better direct people while using a resource that was accessible, impermanent, and adaptable to a variety of uses. Sato’s signs were so well received that his station officials encouraged his work.

TrioFour, a Japanese film artist collective, noticed Sato’s work and set off to find this mysterious artist who created signs out of tape. After getting a lead and racing to Shinjuku Station, he found Shuetsu Sato. At first, Sato was apprehensive, but agreed to do an interview and demonstration.

TrioFour explores Sato’s use of his own unique style, aesthetic, and the purpose of his work. They point out that Sato was embarrassed by his own calligraphic skills and therefore mastered the Gothic font in school. Eventually his signs develop their own style. Sato’s characters have rounded corners because the “soft look makes people feel better while walking around a busy station.” The hand-made and not-so-perfect aesthetic of his work also sets his signs apart from the “official” and sterile look of regular printed signs.

The process is simple. Create a grid for each character to fit in. Place tape to create characters. Cut along the grid lines. Peel.

I stumbled upon this article about Sato while searching for tape art. In the past I have used tape countless times as a simple and quick way to create large letters and arrows as a way to direct or inform. For me, I share Sato’s motive to help people as a reason to create these works. TrioFour’s Hikaru Yamashita says, “Many people create something because they long for attention from others.” This isn’t the case when it comes to Sato’s work. It’s nice that they’re appreciated and that he puts so much time and effort in perfecting his craft, but at the end of the day, what matters is that the message is communicated and the job is done.

More on the story can be read here. It just goes to show how seriously Mattel takes Barbie.
